Cervical Screening Awareness Week is held between the 19th – 24th of June 2023. Organised by Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust, the aim is to share information, tips, and support on how to make attending your screening a little bit easier.
Why is cervical screening important?
Almost one in three women and people with a cervix don’t take up their invitation for cervical screening. According to Public Health England, cervical screening helps prevent 70% of cervical cancer deaths and if everyone attended screening regularly, 83% could be prevented.
At Advance Histopathology Laboratory Ltd (AHLab) we recognise the importance of regular screening, as it is one of the best ways to protect yourself from cervical cancer.
This is why we are supporting Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust because we want you to have all the facts about this potentially life-saving test. For more information visit Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust website.
What is cervical screening?
Cervical screening looks for abnormal cells in your cervix, it is not a test for cancer. The identification of abnormal cells is important because if left untreated they can develop into cancer.
During the screening test, a small sample of cells will be taken from your cervix and checked for certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV) that can cause changes to the cells of your cervix.
If high-risk (HPV) types are found, then the cells of your cervix will be checked for any changes. Identifying any changes early means you can be treated before they have a chance to develop into cancer.
