The importance of cervical screening

A cervical screening also known as a smear test is a simple and free procedure performed by your GP or Gynaecology Consultant under the NHS. Private cervical screening tests are also available. The examination usually takes 5-10 minutes and is a test provided to help prevent cervical cancer. There are around 850 cervical cancer deaths in the UK every year, that’s more than 2 deaths per day. Cervical cancer is the 4th most common cancer in women.

The cervical screening checks for a virus known as HPV (high risk human papillomavirus) and if you have HPV, cervical cell changes and abnormalities. A cervical screening prevents over 7 in 10 diagnoses and is so important amongst women.

A colposcopy is an examination performed to take a closer look at your cervix. This is performed by an expert such as a colposcopist. A colposcopy is used to diagnose and treat cell changes (abnormal cells) where possible. AH Laboratory specialise in diagnosing and providing 2nd opinions within gynaecology related biopsies.
